The “Guyana Model of Leadership” refers to a governance approach that emphasizes inclusive development, sustainable economic diversification, and strategic diplomacy, particularly as exemplified by President Irfaan Ali’s administration. It is emerging as a new and influential framework for regional leadership in the Caribbean and Global South.

However, before delving into Guyana’s current success, it is vital to recognize the historical challenges faced by Guyanese citizens in the Caribbean. Between 1970 and 2015, Guyana grappled with economic vulnerability, political instability, foreign debt, and deteriorating public services. This led to a significant exodus of Guyanese seeking better prospects in countries like the #USA, #Canada, #England, the Caribbean, #Barbados, and #Trinidad and Tobago, among others.

Regrettably, these migrants encountered unwelcoming environments. In Barbados, the infamous “#Guyanese_Bench” at immigration offices symbolized the discrimination and humiliation faced by Guyanese individuals. Similarly, in Trinidad and Tobago, #Guyanese were often marginalized and often called people from the Mud-Land. They were labelled as burdens and denied basic opportunities, reflecting deep-rooted economic and cultural biases that marred regional unity.

Despite these adversities, Guyanese communities persevered, contributing to local economies and upholding the belief in regional solidarity. Today, as Guyana flourishes, it not only harnesses its oil wealth but also embodies the resilience of its people—a fundamental trait for any aspiring regional leader.
